Whether you’re working with an older computer or the latest model, every computer experiences problems every now and then. Many of these issues can be solved quickly and easily at home. Read on to learn about the most common computer problems and how to resolve them yourself.

Computer Running Slow

Before attempting to fix a slow computer you need to determine what’s causing the problem. A lot of computer performance issues occur because of Internet connection, not the device itself. This is often the case when computers take too long to load videos or connect to websites. Sometimes, it’s the website itself that’s experiencing problems.

Visit speedtest.net to test your download and upload speeds. This can help you determine if the problem stems from connectivity problems.

If you believe your PC is causing the problem, check to make sure you have plenty of available space on your operating system’s hard drive. A maxed out hard drive can cause slow performance. Free up space by moving files to another location. This not only improves computer speed and performance, it also protects your files if your computer crashes or becomes infected by viruses or malware.

Pop-Up Ads Appearing Regularly

If you’re seeing a lot of pop-up ads when you aren’t connected to the Internet, you’ve probably unknowingly installed adware on your computer. Although lots of products exist claiming they remove adware, a lot of them do little to help your computer. In fact, some of these products even install adware and viruses.

Start by running a full scan on your computer using credible antivirus software. This will help you locate and remove adware. If this still doesn’t resolve the issue, you may need to use another program like Malwarebytes Anti-Malware to remove the adware from your system. Just make sure you disable your anti-virus software before running this program.

Printer Won’t Print

It seems like printers never work when you need them. Start by checking to make sure your printer’s drivers are up-to-date and that your printer has plenty of ink and paper to complete your project. If all checks out, unplug your printer then plug it back in. Check your printer’s print queue by double clicking on the printer icon on your desktop. Ensure that “Use Printer Offline” isn’t checked.
