Since the beginning of the pandemic, it seems like hackers have been doing all the can to make our lives more difficult. In addition to an increasing number of computer viruses and malware, phishing scams are at an all time high. Designed to steal personal information, phishing scams can cause major problems for those affected. Phishing scams allow hackers to steal bank and other financial information and hackers often sell their victim’s personal information on the black market, increasing the chance of identity theft and other problems.
Phishing Scams Come Via Email, Text Message & Phone
Last week we talked about the recent stimulus check scam, which aims to collect bank information from unsuspecting victims. This is just one of the many scams floating around the Internet right now. It’s important to never provide personal information over the phone, through text messages, or on any website unless you’re absolutely certain it’s the correct web address.
Commonly, phishing scams come via email. While the email may look like it comes from the company it’s claiming to be, if you look a little closer, you’ll notice the email address seems a little off. Maybe there’s an extra letter or number in it. There might be a dash or other symbol you don’t remember. The email probably contains a link to the company’s website. Once clicked, the recipient is directed to a website that looks exactly like the real thing. Hackers have gotten extremely good at mimicking real companies. Once the user enters their personal information, the hacker steals it for their own personal use.
Phishing emails often aim to scare the recipient into acting fast, without thinking through the consequences. They might say that your bank account has been compromised or that they need to verify your information before depositing money in your account. Whatever the case, NEVER click any links in your email. Instead, enter the correct web address directly into your browser. This helps ensure you make it to the right place.
