On October 20th, 2020, Microsoft released their latest update for Windows 10. Version 20H2 includes several features that might be of particular interest to IT professionals. While the latest update contains all previous features and fixes that came with Windows 10 Version 2004, Version 20H2 also includes a scoped set of features for select performance improvements and quality enhancements. Windows 10 users can get this important update through Windows Server Update Services (WSUS) or Windows Update for Business.

Previous Windows 10 Updates

Two years ago, the Windows 10 October 2018 Update was released and then removed from availability due to a serious problem. Users that upgraded found that they were losing data and files during the upgrade process. Thankfully, Microsoft caught the problem early and they’ve been working hard to ensure all newer versions do not cause the same thing to happen.

One of the changes implemented by Microsoft was the introduction of bi-annual updates, the first of which occurs in the first half of the year (H1) and a second, smaller update in the second half of the year (H2). For Windows 10 Version 20H2, Microsoft included the update’s codename in its versioning identity. By looking at the name, users can easily tell the year and timing of the update. This method makes things much easier for system admins and computer repair specialists that must track down which release their clients are using.

Windows 10 Version 20H2 Features

As mentioned above, Windows 10 Version 20H2 includes several features that IT professionals will find extremely useful including:

Perhaps the most notable part of the update, Microsoft’s new Edge browser based on Chromium is included in the Windows update for the first time ever. This updated browser features an IE Mode to allow users to use legacy apps and websites that require Internet Explorer to function.

The update will automatically install the new Edge on client devices. However, clients can still access both Internet Explorer and legacy Edge if necessary.
