New phones get released regularly. It’s not uncommon for people to use their phone for a year or two, then upgrade to the newest model. These people often sell their used phone at a much lower price than phone carriers or electronics stores. Buying a used phone not only saves you money, it’s better for the environment as well.
While we could go on and on about the benefits of purchasing a used phone, it’s important to understand there are risks involved as well. Fake iPhones have become more common on Craigslist and Facebook Marketplace. Although these phones look exactly the same as a regular iPhone on the outside, they are completely different inside. The phone actually has an Android motherboard and uploaded software that makes it look and feel like an iPhone’s interface.
At first glance, fake iPhones work just like a regular iPhone. However, you cannot update the software. Although the phone claims to be “up-to-date”, with a little investigation, the user typically finds the phone is running the wrong iOS. Also, the fake iPhone will not allow the user to import their information and SIM card. Unfortunately, it’s typically too late by the time most people figure out they’ve been tricked. Since the phone was purchased from a stranger, there’s absolutely no way to track them down and/or hold them responsible.
Avoid Being Tricked By Imitations
The best way to avoid being tricked by a fake iPhone is to always buy from a reputable seller. If you do choose to purchase used, make sure you see the phone and check the software settings before exchanging any money. Verify the current software version is up-to-date, or if it’s not, that you can see the newest version and install it. If it says the software is up-to-date but you’re positive it’s not the current iOS, it’s best to pass on the phone.
